 Water With Contaminants

Tap Water vs. Bottled Water

The tap water versus bottled water versus filtered water debate remains a hot topic among the health conscious or those directly affected by water contamination concerns in their cities and neighborhoods.

Ironically, often this discussion might come up in the office break room surrounding a water cooler or on the soccer field/playground with your kids.

An awareness in our society of how important it is to drink plenty of water on a daily basis seems to be growing rapidly.

Although many of us have heard that most bottled water is no cleaner than the water we get from our kitchen sink, we still continue to purchase plastic bottles in bulk.

For many, the first question is, once we've decided to transition to using filtered water pitchers or other home filtration devices; Which method of filtration should we use?

There are filters that use filtration methods like KDF(Kinetic Degradation Fluxion) and adsorption with Activated Carbon Filters. Then there are purification methods such as, reverse osmosis, distillation, ultraviolet, and even ozone treated water.

Either way you decide, the trend is in favor of pure water filtration and below we list the benefits of filtering your water at home.

Benefits of Drinking Filtered Water

1.  Saves You Money

First things first.  "What's it gonna cost?"  "It seems so expensive."

The truth is, according to the Food and Water Watch Organization buying bottled water will cost you thousands more over time, than if you just used tap water every day.

The average wholesale price per gallon of non-sparkling water was $1.20 in 2013 as reported by the Beverage Marketing Corporation (BMC).  The cost per gallon of tap water is approximately $0.004 cents per gallon in most major cities around the United States.

It's no surprise that the revenue for the Bottled Water Industry in 2014 reached 8 Billion dollars according to statista.com.

Purchase water filtration systems to use at home and on the road.   Even with the apparently high initial investment, and cost of replacement filters, you will save hundreds of dollars, maybe thousands of dollars in the long run if you carry your own water bottle and fill up at home.

Just fill up from the filtration device you choose and save your money.

2.  Know What You're Getting - Water Quality Control

The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) completed a four year investigation to evaluate the quality of bottled water. They researched published and unpublished documents and data sources.

The NRDC contacted resources from all 50 states to collect surveys on any surveys conducted on bottled water quality and interviewed experts from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

In addition, they performed tests from 3 independent laboratories, testing the quality from over 1,000 bottles and 103 different brand names in the bottled water industry.

Although, their investigation found that there were indeed contaminants found in many of the bottled water, most of the brands bottles contained water of relatively good quality.  Some brands tested poorly with high level of bacteria found.

When you buy bottled water for the sake of drinking clean water, there is no guarantee that what you are drinking is actually clean.

With your own filtered devices at home you are able to control and evaluate the water you are drinking with confidence.

3.  Accessible, Painless and User-Friendly

There are several ways you can easily filter water at home.  The simplest and least expensive way to begin would be by purchasing a filteredwater pitcher for the home or filtered water bottles.  The setup for a countertop filtration system is also quick and painless to set up.

Rushing out to the store to buy heavy cases of bottled water, straining to return and refill giant 5-Gallon bottles, or subscribing to expensive water delivery services would no longer be necessary if you filtered your tap water from the comfort of your own home.  Less time organizing and recycling your plastics is another benefit.

The only maintenance for you once you've established a water filtration system is to replace the filters.

Owning one of the more advanced filtration systems on the market typically only requires filter replacement every 6 months and some last up to a whole year of use before requiring a change of filter.

4.  Avoid Contaminants and Provide Clean Mineral Rich Water For Your Family

Based on the type of water filter you choose, whether it's a countertop, whole house, gravity fed, or filtered water pitcher a high percentage of possible contaminants can be successfully removed from the water you drink or shower with.  Many filters are designed to ensure that the minerals of the water are retained after filtration.

With a little research and patience you can find the filtration device that meets the needs of you and your family.

Water filtration at home will help ensure that you receive clean water and the health benefits that go along with it.

5.  Protects The Environment

The use of plastics continues to increasingly become an urgent concern.  Our oceans around the world are collecting more and more trash. The majority of it in the form of plastic.  See related article here.

It's important that we recognize the dangers this poses to our environment and wildlife.

However, every little step we can take to move away from the use of plastic bottles will help decrease the amount we put out every year.

We can start reducing our use of plastic by re-using BPA Free water bottlesand filling up at home with our own clean filtered water.

With diligence and by spreading awareness, we will benefit the planet and all of the generations to come.
